New Standards in Lighting

New standards for indoor lighting.

The new standards will NOT ban incandescent bulbs. You’ll still be able to buy energy-saving halogen incandescent bulbs that look exactly the same as the ones you’re used to, and more than pay for themselves over the life of the 100 watt replacement bulb.

To save even more money, there are a wide range of new options like CFLs and LEDs. These options are 75 or 80 percent more efficient than traditional lighting, and they’ll last 10 or 25 times longer. In some cases, you might never have to replace them.

The lighting standards will slowly phase in from 2012 to 2014. Again the new standards do not ban incandescent or any specific bulb type; they say that bulbs need to use about 25% less energy. The bipartisan Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007 - during the G W Bush Presidency) established these efficiency standards.

As of January 1, 2012, traditional, inefficient 100W incandescent light bulbs will not meet the standards and will no longer be available at most stores.

Traditional 75 watt incandescent light bulbs will no longer be available as of January 1, 2013.

Traditional 40 and 60 watt incandescent light bulbs will no longer be available as of January 1, 2014.

After all the hype and BS about saving the American consumer money by forcing higher energy standards - what this will cause in the long run is more expensive energy.

As the system phases in, the cost of the energy you consume will go up and it will cost them less to send it out which will equal more profit for them again.
