Defense Secretary Robert Gates Committed for one year

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has announced that he will remain in his post for another year. The move will keep him in office through the next Afghanistan strategy review due in 2010.

Secretary Gates was originally appointed by former President George W. Bush. He was sworn in on December 18, 2006, as the 22nd Secretary of Defense. President Obama had requested that Gates stay on as Defense Secretary in his administration. Many of the people on both sides of the political fence had thought that Gates would only stay on through the first few months and maybe the first full year of President Obama's administration.

Gates apparently announced his commitment to remain in his current position for at least one more year during a meeting with President Obama held just before Christmas.
