Decriminalization and Legalization of Marijuana for Economic Growth (part 1)

The devil weed.

Nothing says economic boom like the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana and commercial grade hemp.

I have repeatedly attempted to ask the President and the administration to strongly consider the opportunities that the two actions would afford the citizens of the United States.

Just ponder the following briefly:

The decriminalization of marijuana would reduce the burden on the current legal system by reducing inmate population drastically - and it would have an immediate impact on the cost of policing and courts as there is currently one marijuana related arrest made every 37 seconds in the United States.

That's what I said - 1 arrest every 37 seconds.

Do you know why there are so many arrests for marijuana related offenses?

Because there are 6,000 new Americans who try marijuana for the first time every single day.

The war on drugs, which was launched in 1971 by then President Nixon, has not been a successful war thus far.

What does it cost to capture prosecute and jail a marijuana user?
$65,000 is about the average.

If someone is arrested for marijuana every 37 seconds in the United States that would be roughly 97.29 arrests every hour or 2,335 arrests made every day.

What kind of a drag is that on our economy by itself?

1 days worth of marijuana arrests costs the American tax payer $155,775,000

$155,775,000 per day translates to $56.8 Billion a year.
I think I just found a hidden savings and an instant relief for the economy and I am only touching the surface of my first item!

NORML Blog: Marijuana NewsI am not including the salaries of the DEA officers assigned to marijuana cases. I am not including the fuel costs for airplanes, helicopters, trucks, cars and motorcycles that are required to perform the job for these agents. Nor am I including the purchase prices for the equipment or vehicles mentioned above. Let alone the correctional employee salaries, judges salaries, law clerks, transportation and so on. I think you get the point by now.

Come on - it's just common sense folks.

No way in hell any politician would touch this with a 10 foot pole when the elections are on the way. Can you see the fallout from promoting something like this?

Seriously? There are already 2 candidates that support it and our president already said he has smoked weed! People should pull there heads out of the sand! Get out of the dark ages! From what I can tell right now, the only way Obama will get re-elected is if he changes his campaign slogan from Yes We Can to Yes We Cannabis!
