Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee formerly a Republican Senator from 1999 to 2007, ran and won the Rhode Island Governorship as an Independent in 2010.  According to some reports the Governor has decided to run for reelection on the Democrat ticket, however the Governors Administration has not made an official announcement yet.

Governor Chafee is expected to be running against state treasurer Gina Raimondo and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras in the Democrat primary.

Governor Chafee endorsed President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. During Wednesdays White House briefing press secretary Jay Carney said the President "welcomes" Chafee to the party and pointed out the governor has supported Obama's views in the past.
"I’m thrilled to welcome Linc to the party of Jefferson and Jackson, Roosevelt and Kennedy and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead," said Obama in a statement released Wednesday afternoon.
