Ohio seeks welfare waiver from the US Department of Health and Human Services

Officials in Ohio petitioned the federal government in October for more flexibility in requirements for welfare recipients. Officials say that certain rules don't provide enough time for people to complete transitional training or other job-related activities.

Ohio is petitioning to adjust the limit of 12 months for vocational training noting that a number of in-demand jobs require training that far exceeds the current limitation and can exceed 36 months in length.

Gov. John Kasich's administration see this as a way to transition the state's welfare recipients off of welfare and into the state's workforce.
